WOODBRIDGE—Ed Potosnak, Democratic Candidate for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, was contacted on Wednesday by concerned voters who were targeted with e-mails from Congressman Lance’s Congressional office this week. Mr. Lance sent last minute e-mails to voters from his House e-mail address touting his conservative stances on legislation including one focused upon the Second Amendment (see attached e-mail). The letter lists pieces of legislation Lance supported while in Congress, with no indication that it is in response to a constituent letter or inquiry.
“It is clear,” said Potosnak, “that my opponent is using his government office to engage in campaigning right before the election. The voters who contacted me explicitly noted that they had not sent Mr. Lance any recent correspondence, indicating that these e-mails from his office were unsolicited. My opponent is attempting to circumvent the laws that govern our elections in a desperate attempt to hold on to his seat. We know that Mr. Lance paid $19,000 for an internal poll he has not released. Campaigns will share polls that show them in a favorable position for Election Day, so we can surmise that Mr. Lance’s poll results were unfavorable. The results of his poll have him running scared and employing desperate measures to hold on to his career in politics.”
“Mr. Lance has been proclaiming to anyone within earshot recently that he is a bipartisan moderate, but the rhetoric used in the e-mail is clearly an attempt to win over those on the far-right. This is not only a transparent attempt to pander to his fractured base that barely re-elected him in his own primary, but a potential violation of federal law.”
“Congressman Lance, a self-proclaimed moderate, has changed since going to Washington: both on the issues and in the way he executes the duties of his office. He is trying to save his job by using official government resources. This is what is wrong with Washington: career politicians try to use the trappings of their office to manipulate elections.”
