Two Congressional candidates are endorsed by the National Stonewall Democrats in New Jersey. Incumbent and longtime Democratic Congressman Rush Holt will receive support in the 12th District. Meanwhile in the 7th Congressional District a political newcomer, Ed Potosnak, a former staffer for Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.) and public school teacher, will be receiving support from the National organization.

Please Sign Petition Concerning TIME column: "My Own Private India"

E-mail Print PDF

As residents, supporters and representatives of Edison, we are dismayed that TIME Magazine would publish this column using humor to mask a misguided description of the growth of the immigrant community of Edison, New Jersey.

The author’s rhetoric feeds a xenophobic sentiment that targets all immigrant populations and relies on pat racial stereotypes to single out the Asian American community’s significant contributions to our area.

We know that the South Asian community, like other immigrant communities, has helped the township of Edison flourish and is an integral part of the New Jersey tapestry. The contributions of Asian Americans make this country stronger and should be applauded, not treated with the indecency displayed on the pages of TIME Magazine.

To address the objections highlighted above, we ask TIME Magazine to:

  • Provide ample space for responses to the misguided descriptions in this column
  • Initiate a conversation about the impact of a piece like this on Asian Americans, and other immigrant community that have chosen this country as their home.
  • Avoid racial stereotyping like this to appear so casually in their magazine in the future

WASHINGTON BLADE: Gay candidates harp on opponents’ ‘Don’t Ask’ votes

Gay candidates seeking congressional office are capitalizing on their incumbent opponents’ votes against overturning “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to build support in their electoral bids.

Those seeking to oust lawmakers from office are hoping that public support for ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” — which a CNN poll taken before congressional votes last month found nearly 80 percent of Americans favor overturning — will help build opposition to lawmakers who opposed the repeal compromise.

Examiner: Momentum for Ed Potosnak

E-mail Print PDF

By: Jacob Zychick

New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District Republican Primary featured three men who all waged their campaign as being the conservative option against incumbent Leonard Lance. Congressman Lance was able to easily fend off the competition, even though at one point in the campaign it looked as if the race might be a lot closer than anyone associated with the incumbent wanted to believe. As the Primary results came in those three men were able to combine for over 13,000 votes, which would be approximately 3,000 votes less than Leonard Lance’s total. The accomplishment that David Larsen, Lon Hosford, and Bruce Baker made was that Leonard Lance would have to show his cards sooner rather than later; which on the campaign trail only could have helped Ed Potosnak, the Democratic challenger. In a district that has a history of voting Republican and a reputation for being a Republican strong-hold; can Ed Potosnak use some of the anti-Lance Republican momentum for an Election Day victory?
